If you have a small home gym space, one of the most important pieces of equipment you can buy are adjustable dumbbells. With that in mind I wanted to provide a review of the Bowflex Selectech 552 adjustable dumbbells, which I have owned since 2012.
The dumbbell is a versatile fitness tool that allows you to train the entire body.
When combined with a good adjustable weight bench, you can literally train dozens of exercises.
The very fact that I have owned my Bowflex adjustable dumbbells since 2012 should tell you all you need to know about their durability.
And I can tell you, they have definitely been used!
I purchased them back then after I had sold off my dumbbell set and other equipment due to a move.
I still needed some sort of equipment, as my primary workout program back then was P90X. Dumbbell exercises were featured prominently in that program.
Features of the Bowflex Selectech 552 adjustable dumbbells
At both ends of the dumbbell is a dial, and in between are weights of various sizes. These all sit within a storage tray with slots for each weight.
You can adjust the dumbbells in increments of 2.5 pounds from 5 pounds to 25 pounds.
From there, they can be adjusted in 5 pound increments up to 50 pounds. One more adjustment takes the total potential weight of each dumbbell up to 52.5 pounds.
The dials allow you to adjust the weight quickly, which is nice when you are doing something like a drop set where you don’t want to rest in between sets in an effort to get that pump into the muscle.
The individual weights themselves are designed to be as narrow as possible in order to keep the length of the dumbbell in check, which is nice.
These weights are made of durable metal as is the locking system to keep the weights in place.
Lastly, the dumbbells have an ergonomically designed grip with a non slip handle. Therefore, you can maintain good control even with sweaty hands!
Are Bowflex adjustable dumbbells expensive?
Well, when you compare them to what you will pay for an entire set of dumbbells from five pounds to 50 pounds, they are definitely not expensive.
They are priced higher than other adjustable dumbbells.
But, as I said, I’ve owned mine since 2012 and they are showing no signs of needing to be replaced.
It’s hard for me to see not owning them until the day I die!
How many other items that get as much work can you say that about?
I highly recommend the Bowflex Selectech Adjustable Dumbbells
The bottom line is that I can’t recommend these dumbbells enough.
They have stood the test time and spawned many cheaper options. You should consider that to be a compliment to them.
Yes, you can buy cheaper adjustable dumbbells, but we are talking about a lifetime investment here. Why skimp?
